Projet Replica : moteur de recherche iconographique par l'image

Description de la séance

REPLICA, a project led by the DHLAB, aims to digitize the photolibrary in the Giorgio Cini Foundation (Venice), which has about 1 million photos of extraordinary historical and artistic value constituting an integral part of European cultural heritage. All the images will become available online and searchable through the use of pattern recognition.

The research at the DHLAB explores a variety of techniques, based on Convolutional Neural Network, able to identify structural and compositional elements common to works of art by identifying similarities between images at different scales: larger scales describing general patterns in the overall image, and smaller scales containing finer details. The computer science team is well aware and in closeness with the great theories of the history of image analysis: from the great tradition of the Connoisseurship to the key approach by Aby Warburg.
